Today (January 25th) is St Dwynwen’s Day the Welsh patron saint of lovers (like St Valentine’s Day)
‘Cariad’ is the Welsh word for love. Welsh suitors would carve a wooden spoon to give as a love token. Some of these spoons were highly symbolic and intricately carved. So much more of a gesture than flowers as it took many hours and not a little skill to achieve the finished object.
